I have a long interview in THE COMICS JOURNAL #306, on my cartooning career and my code-generated comics. Thanks to writer Marc Sobel (https://thebristolboard.tumblr.com)! Starts on page 158.
catteblog asked:
My blog? I’ve been a cartoonist and illustrator for years, doing comic book covers and bubblegum cards. When I got a computer, I got excited about the idea of writing code to make fake comics and randomly code-generated cartoon art.
A little at a time, I learned how to draw with code. Later I started this codecartooning blog, to share my code art, and explore making gif animations. I focus on making cartoon-like art purely by writing code. And using random decisions for surprise.
With code-generated sounds, animated forms leave marks that accumulate onscreen.
Everything was made purely by writing code and using chance decisions (JavaScript, HTML5 Canvas, Web Audio API).
C. M. in Salinas CA asked what to do about a creative block.
I’ve tried these:
Meditate, and Think on ideas for about 20 minutes.
Walk, and Think for about 20 minutes.
List Ideas on paper. Save. Look sometimes. Add new ideas.
Combine 2 Things. Try opposites.
Copy Ideas, and add a twist.
Use mistakes or randomness.
Try automatic drawing or writing. Your hand may have a mind of its own.
Do a really simple, bad version of your idea, if it’s too hard or confusing.
No Idea? Draw anything. Let it tell you what to do next.
Look at books, or clippings. Or the internet… but write or draw something before you’ve seen the whole internet.
THINGS TO DO (Randomly Generated Video)
A video from an endless, random, code-generated idea list for creative people.
I wrote custom JavaScript code to make the words, art and sounds, and Chrome browser’s voice synthesis speaks the words, in varying pitches.
Everything’s made by writing code (JavaScript, HTML5 Canvas, Web Audio).
BEAUTIFUL DEPRESSION, from LOOP 10, one of my randomly generated code art sketchbooks. Drawn purely by writing code.
Waiting for an A.I. to create comics strips? Read my BRIEF HISTORY OF CODE CARTOONING. No A.I. was used, just hand-crafted computer code. And randomness.
